Rewritten briefs.

As I've gone through the module some of my briefs have changed ever so slightly for various reasons. The main thing that has changed on many of them is the outcomes that I've created. The reason I've changed the outcomes has been because I felt with some briefs I was creating product for the sake of it when there was already a substantial amount so I've taken products out of the outcomes. These are my final written briefs.

Final crit.

My current resolved work set out for the crit.

There were a few specific things I wanted to get out of this crit but it was mostly about the quality of my design boards. I wanted to know if they told the story well for someone who was looking at my projects for the first time. At this stage I knew exactly where each of my briefs were going so feedback on extension of briefs wasn't particularly relevent because there just wasn't the time for this. It was maybe good to think about how the briefs could have gone further though in other peoples opinions. The feedback I got given regarding my boards was positive in the sense that the people discussing them had never seen the work before and they understood it all. The only negative feedback I'd gotten really was to do with the fact my blog wasn't completely up to date but I knew this already despite trying to catch up in time for the crit. Overall, the crit was really useful and it was so good to see what people had been doing, everyone had some really amazing stuff!

Tigerprint colour; colourways.

When I had my progress tutorial with Fred we discussed the various briefs I had been working on and he suggested a few ways in which some briefs could be pushed further. For the Tigerprint brief he suggested creating different colourways so that there would be more than one party pack available in store. I went back and created four new colourways also based on the colour trends for spring/summer 2013 and suitable for a male target audience. This was a really quick way of extending this brief but I wish I'd done it sooner so that I could have applied each of these colours to the products to be photographed too. This at least shows that I am considering how the range could realistically be pushed if the products were actually going to be put in store.

Progress surgery.

With the progress surgery I didn't really have any questions in particular about my work because I knew exactly what I needed to do to get the work done. I went through each of my briefs and took examples from them to show Phil where I'd got up to and the sort of things I was producing. There was a bit of concern about how much I still have left to do for various briefs and the fact I don't seem to be stressed about it yet. I think it's trusted that I will get everything done though in time for submission though. The main piece of advice I got was, how can I really push all of my briefs in the time I have left available to me? and also not to forget about the greater context of my briefs and how various products will exist. I know that I really need to speed up the pace after this progress surgery but I'm confident I can do it.

Tigerprint colour; foiling test.

Some of the advice I got from the crit was to have a go at foiling the patterns for the Tigerprint brief to add to the quality of the product and make it a bit more exciting. I bought two different types of blue foil to see which would compliment the ink colour best and applied this to various different versions of my pattern to also see what would work best. The larger squares work really well with the foil and it doesn't neccessarily have to be neat because this also fits in with the style of the pattern design. I definitely think I'm going to take the idea of foiling the products forward but probably only the invitations and the rsvps because these are more keep sake than many of the other products within my range.

Tigerprint Colour; invitation and rsvp.

These are the final designs for the invitation and the rsvp. They are exactly the same design but the rsvp will be smaller than the invitation so that when the invitation is posted, the rsvp and envelope can be placed inside. There is the inpracticality that the rsvp is going to be so small it could get lost in the post but I thought about the fact it coul be put inside another envelope as most people tend to have these at home. When printed, both of these will also be foiled. The insides are now both blank so that a personal message can be written inside because as a consumer of these products, I much prefer it when I can write whatever I'd like and from experience, other people do too.

Tigerprint Colour; banner development.

Before desinging this product, I already had a typeface in mind that I thought might be appropriate because it's quite positive and bold enough to work in a banner format.

I started off by having a going at using the repeat pattern within another product again for the same reason as with the envelopes. This idea would be that the typeface would be all in black saying 'happy birthday' on top of the repeat pattern design. I don't think this really works because the black is too harsh on top of the bright colours but if I were to change the black to orange or blue the text wouldn't be a visable.

I then tried the idea of cutting the font out from the repeat pattern. I've tried this twice on different areas of the pattern to see if it made any difference but on both occassions it doesn't work due to the gaps in the pattern. You can just read the text but not enough to make it a good design decision.

I thought I'd move away from the repeat pattern because this obviously isn't working for this element so I just decided to use the straight forward colours. The idea with this is that the letters would be cut out and attached to ribbon. There would be two banners with in the pack for each of the colours used in the pattern. I got this far with this idea and then decided that really it's a bit plain compared to the pattern design and theres so much more I could do with it to make it fit in.

I then came up with the idea of going back to basics and like with the pattern, hand rendered the typeface so it has sketchy edges because this will be more consistent with what I've already designed for this range.

I decided to apply colour in the same way that I have done with the Paperchase logo and also the invitation imagery design so that everything links together. I thought about the fact I could have a blue banner and an orange banner in this style or just a single blue and orange one. Although this is looking more like it's going in the right direction, I'm not sure about the format of the colours because some of the other elements of this project are a bit more minimal.

I decided to go for the two seperate banners to have more products within the range and took away the colour from the inside of the text. This looks so much better because not only does it look tidier but it now fits in with the exisiting products. The idea is that I will cut the seperate letters out and attach them to ribbon for them to be hung up. I'm pleased with this as an outcome because the decisions I've made one after the other have got me here so theres definite justification.

Crit.

This was the first proper crit we've had on actual produced outcomes and I felt I had a substantial amount of work in order to get the relevent feedback I required. At this point I had products for some of my briefs and concepts set in stone for all of them as well as various design development so people could see the direction that my work is going to take. I had some specific questions I posted to people about which designs they preferred for various briefs as I'd kind of hit a brick wall with some of them. I feel overall, this crit was really useful and I got a lot out of it. The briefs I was stuck on can now be taken forward using the feedback I've been given. People also seemed to like the direction my briefs were going in so this was really good because at least I know they are working and will hopefully be successful. I filled out a sheet myself too just so I know exactly what I need to do next in order to move on with the briefs.

Tigerprint Colour; envelope development.

I decided to design the envelopes as part of this brief too because I thought it would be quite interesting if I could utilise the actual pattern design seeing as I spent quite a lot of time developing this. I've come up with designs where this could be applied in the center and simple full colour envelopes that match the colours used in the pattern.

I printed a couple of mock ups out for the envelopes to see which is going to be the appropriate size for my cards and make sure the net I've been designing with works. Had to do this a couple of times before I got the right one.

Tigerprint Colour; invitation development.

I took my favourite pattern from the ones I have developed and started applying this to an invitation format. I've gone for square because I quite like this as a format to design with and it can be small but with quite a lot of space. I've tried to apply the pattern in a range of different ways to give myself options, including stripping the pattern right back and using it in it's simplest form which is just a single sketchy square. I think although the brief was originally about surface pattern, I've done a lot of that this year so I want to do something different. I quite like the single sketchy square, one with blue at the front and one without, because you get more detail out of it being this big so I think this is the design I will take forward. The idea of having two different designs within one pack is also quite nice for variety.

I also started looking at different fonts you could use on the inside of the invitation for the relevent information. I've tried to go for fonts that are quite simple so easy to read but also those that stand out so they fit with the design on the outside.

I quite like this font because it has a hand rendered approach to it and the inital square of this design was drawn by hand. Due to having two different front designs within the same pack I also thought it could be appropriate to have two different colours of the font within each. The colours are taken from the front design.

From a recent crit we had, I printed out all of the pattern designs and asked for peoples opinions on them. They said it would be quite nice if I added some sort of finish to the design because at the moment it's quite plain and people would be more likely to buy into the product if it had a special element to it. I then had a go at foiling various patterns that I liked best to see how this would work. It didn't really work on the smaller repeat pattern because you lose the detail but on the bigger squares I want to take forward, it actually looks really good. It also doesn't matter if it's a little bit untidy because this fits in with the style of the overall design.

Tigerprint Colour; logo development.

With the colours I have been exploring in the new patterns I've developed for Tigerprint, I also decided to adapt the paperchase logo to match the pattern as a form of branding the range because I don't feel it has to have it's own name if I do this. I've applied the colours in various different ways to see which work best and I think a mixture of blue and orange together seems to work best because these are the two colours within the pattern design. As with the pattern, I've applied the same attributes to the text so that the two work together.

Tigerprint Colour; developed pattern.

I have decided to further develop the pattern designs I did for the Tigerprint competition for the next stage of this brief. My reasoning for doing so is because I felt the other colours were a bit bland on some of the designs and constrasted with other colours a little bit too much. I've gone for bright, simple and bold colours on the above designs. As you flick through you can see how the design has developed through to the last one which I am planning to take forward on the products. The overall design should appeal to men due to the rugged aspect and the fact the concept is quite simple.

Tigerprint Colour; re-written brief.

I've rewritten this brief so that I am now designing a party pack for a male target audience. When I really thought about the original brief, the product range didn't really get me excited so I decided to come up with something that I'll enjoy designing more. This brief will give me a greater chance to explore deisgn for print and also layout and the application of image because I will have to consider how I will apply the pattern I have already designed. Designing for a male target audience will also be a good challenge because a lot of ranges like this tend to be aimed more toward females. I think the pattern design I've established already will make these outcomes unique because they are not the generic celebratory products you usually get.

Re-written briefs.

I re-wrote my final briefs again because this week i've moved forward with some of them in terms of concepts and the direction they are going to take. There hasn't been any major changes as such. The main changes have been with themes I am going to use throughout some of the briefs and the product ranges I am going to produce. I feel a lot happier now I have some solid concepts to get stuck into.

This is the original YCN brief incase it needs to be referred to for specific submission guidelines.
